Q: Do we have to give an employee time off to attend their child’s school conference?

A: Generally, federal law does not require employers to provide employees with time off to attend parent-teacher conferences or other school activities. However, some states and local jurisdictions have laws requiring employers to provide leave for certain school-related activities, including parent-teacher conferences, school meetings, and educational events.

These laws vary in terms of employer size, employee eligibility, permitted reasons for leave, advance notice requirements, and whether the time off must be paid or unpaid. In some cases, employers may require employees to use available vacation or personal leave.

Employers should review applicable state and local laws, as well as their own leave policies, before denying a request for time off to attend a child’s school conference.
