Q: What happens if a COBRA participant waits until the end of the grace period to pay the monthly premium and has a medical claim in the meantime?
A: COBRA participants generally have a 30-day grace period to pay monthly premiums. During that time, coverage may be suspended and claims may be held or denied pending payment. If the full premium is paid within the grace period, coverage must be reinstated retroactively to the beginning of the coverage period, and eligible claims can then be reprocessed.
