Q: What does a grace period mean for COBRA payments?

A: A COBRA grace period is the additional time a qualified beneficiary has to make a required premium payment without losing COBRA coverage. After the initial COBRA premium payment, plans generally must provide at least a 30-day grace period for each subsequent monthly premium. For example, if a monthly premium is due September 1, the individual generally has until September 30 to make the payment. Coverage may be held or appear inactive while payment is pending, but if the full premium is paid within the grace period, COBRA coverage continues according to the plan’s terms.
