The temporary pause on COBRA payments and timeframes, which was extended during the COVID-19 National Emergency, came to an end on July 10, 2023. From this date onwards, the previously tolled COBRA election, payment, and extended timeframes that began in 2020 will no longer be in effect.
Over three years ago, the President declared a COVID-19 National Emergency, resulting in the suspension of certain COBRA payment, notice, and election deadlines. Eligible individuals were granted additional time to elect and pay for COBRA continuation coverage. Now that the COVID-19 National Emergency is over, the pause on COBRA election and payment timeframes is also concluding.
It’s important to note that the tolling of COBRA timeframes will not extend beyond July 10, 2023. On this date, COBRA timeframes will revert back to the pre-pandemic rules.
